When we attended the last dispersal at Camp Cooley in 2010, we had no idea what a stroke of luck our introduction to Ken Hughes would turn out to be. Ken had worked with the Brinks Brangus cowherd in Kansas for ten years and then moved with the cattle to Texas, where he worked with the Brangus, Charolais, and Angus herds at Camp Cooley for nineteen years. A friendship soon formed and he became one of our most trusted advisors. In the years that followed, he took over all of our cattle matings. Ken was our Genetic Director from then until his passing in 2019.
He instilled in us, the need to make a ‘cow’ out of every mating, with an emphasis on moderate frame size, adequate muscle, and fleshing ability in all of our females. We strive to make cattle that are structurally sound, have plenty of guts and capacity and will thrive in a variety of scenarios.
